Have you ever thought of becoming a car salesman? If this is something that interests you, I can tell you that there is a lot of money to be made in this industry. There are not too many jobs out there where you can make a lot of money without a lot of education like a car salesman, whether it’s for used cars, new cars and even low to high end car sales.
To become a car salesman, it’s not difficult to get into, but there is some preparation before you can dive in. Once you get into it, being a car salesman is like being hooked. It’s hard to change the profession because it can be both rewarding and enjoyable at the same time. As far as requirements go, really if you can read, write and speak well, you’d be considered.
The First Steps to Becoming a Car Salesman
The first thing you need to do is look online or in the newspaper (old school) for ads looking for car salespeople. You will find that the larger dealers will have more job posting than the small used car dealerships. This is because it’s pretty common for a lot of turnover in larger dealerships, due to salespeople looking for better commissions and other dealers luring them in. You might get lucky with a small dealership if they are hiring but these smaller dealers often just have family members working but this is not always the case.
The Characteristics You Must Have
You must have a strong desire to make money. You must also be knowledgeable of cars, and as a bonus, knowledgeable of the cars you are selling. For example, if you know a lot about Porsche’s, it would certainly help you if you were to apply for a sales job at a Porsche dealership. If you get an interview, they will certainly ask you about the cars and if you have all the answers, this is definitely a checkmark ticked off on their list in your favour.
Get an Interview
Once you are in with an interview, you will most likely be interviewed by the sales manager, or possibly two or more sales managers. As for dress, it would be good to observe how the current salespeople are dressed prior to going into your interview. Dress like them. It will only help your chances. You will want to be clean shaven and most important – have good breath. Do you think someone will want to hire you to speak to customers if your breath stinks? Once in the interview, be yourself. Don’t act like you think how you should act. They will see right through you.
You Got the Job. Now for the Training
Once you land your car salesman gig, there will be some kind of formal training. They will want to make sure you are prepared for the job and be able to answer any questions that customers may have. It would look really bad if you can’t answer a simple question, so knowledge is one of the main ingredients that makes a good salesman, and one that can be trusted.
Here are Some Tips
To make it as a good salesman, there are some things you should do. Pay attention to the other sales people that have the best numbers. When you are not busy and they have a customer, try to get close and listen in without appearing to be watching. You may be surprised at some of the tips you can pick up. You can also ask the top salespeople for advice. If you stroke their ego a little bit at first, they might give you some golden nuggets that you can use.
There you have it, sounds pretty simple doesn’t it. A car salesman can be a rewarding experience and is a job unlike any other. If done right, it can be a very lucrative and fun career.
